Randal Bays & Dáithí Sproule If you know anything about Irish traditional music and its phenomenal resurgence in the last 30 years, you'll have heard of Dáithí Sproule. He's a master musician and singer, easily at or near the top of anyone's list of the great guitarists in Irish music. He's been a member of the great Donegal band "Altan" for many years, and the list of brilliant musicians he's worked with and classic recordings he's contributed to would fill several pages. He was one of the pioneers of the use of DADGAD tuning in Irish music, beginning with his group, "Skara Brae" in the late 1960's in Ireland. Dáithí is a fluent Irish speaker and possesses a remarkable repertoire of songs in both Irish and English, which he delivers with warmth, good humor and a wealth of interesting lore. | When I went to live in rural western Massachusetts in 2001, by coincidence Dáithí moved there at about the same time and was living just a few miles down the road. We'd met here and there over the years but didn't know each other well, though I'd long admired his music. We began playing together in house parties, then some local gigs, then we started touring together and eventually released our album, "Overland" in 2004. Through it all we became good friends, and our duo performances have evolved to reflect that friendship and our shared love of music. (and coffee) | ||||||
| "We enjoy performing, and our concerts are where we bring together the many strands of our musical selves – fiddle tunes, sad songs, funny songs, guitar duets. We try to blend it all together into something like a friendly musical visit, and we’re happy when our audiences feel the same joy in the music that we do ourselves.” – Randal Bays | ![]() |
